We got together on April 23rd 2004 to work on the preparation
of our CV's and teaching philosophy organized by Matthias Kawski. We were
told to bring in at least a rough draft of teaching philosophies. Most
of us had at least the first few paragraphs written. My begining statement
was very idealistic, but it was still a start. We went over the statements
of some of us. And it was brought out that it is better to be realistic
regarding the teaching philosophies and it is fine to mention some actual
experiences that happened in the classroom. If you include one or two salient
feedbacks from some of the students, that is even better.
Then we started to work on some points on the CV. If you have any publications,
you should certainly have that there, but if you don't have any it is better
to avoid the heading totally. Also it is worth mentioning the awards that
you have got, provided they are well known, or it is likely that the school
that you are applying for, would have heard of them. Otherwise, they might
not mean anything to the interviewees. We discussed the importance of attending
conferences and giving talks, while applying for the job. After going over
a couple of resume's, the workshop ended.
